About Project

The QUB New Year Workshop, run by Queen’s Language Centre, is held each year to celebrate global traditions, letting international students experience different cultures. In late 2021, most workshops moved online due to the pandemic.

I was excited to join the 2022 workshop, leading a Chinese paper cutting session to share Chinese New Year traditions.

Problem

Some main challenges we faced during the project included the shift to online interaction due to the pandemic, which made it tougher to keep students engaged without face-to-face contact; the difficulty of sharing traditional culture like paper cutting over a screen, where details were harder for students to fully appreciate; and the need for solid tech support, including reliable streaming and interactive tools, to ensure smooth participation for everyone.

Goal

Here’s what we set out to do with the project—fun, engaging, and as real as possible, even online:

  1. Boost Online Engagement: Create fun, interactive ways to keep students interested and involved, even in a virtual setting.
  2. Make Cultural Experiences Feel Real: Find creative ways to bring traditional activities, like paper cutting, to life online so students could really get a feel for them.
  3. Keep Tech Running Smoothly: Set up solid tech support for smooth streaming and easy interaction, making sure students could join in without any hiccups. </aside>
